The World’s First Hovering Flight Ornithopter NAV with Two Flapping Wings

When we were young, some parents loved to bring us to the park in weekend. Could you still remember the scene, where you spent the precious time playing helicopter with your family? It sounds like a very happy moment, isn’t it?

If you’re fascinated with the helicopter, then you have to check out the World’s first hovering flight Ornithopter NAV!

Honestly, the Ornithopter NAV is a part of the DARPA Awards AeroVironment Phase II contract extension in April 2009. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is responsible to design and develop a high-tech flying prototype for the Nano Air Vehicle (NAV) program.

According to the latest progression, the research team claimed has achieved a technical milestone, which they’ve able to control hovering flight of an air vehicle system with two flapping wings.

Dr. Hylton, the leader of the research team said that the hovering flight Ornithopter is capable to carry its own energy source. The more interesting part about the Ornithopter is it only uses the flapping wings for propulsion and control!

The final goals of the Ornithopter is to develop a super-lighted helicopter, which is can be used to hover for extended periods and flying at forward speeds up to 10 meters per second! In addition, it would be better, if it can withstand 2.5 meter per second wind and can be controlled in the range of up to a kilometer. [link]
