You’re one of the big fan of Retro airplane and you’ve a lot of collection of antique airplane replicas? Then, this Ellipse Wings is going to make you excited…
Do you know that in Belarus, they’re still using those airplanes with Ellipse wings? According to the local pilots, they said it has a few benefits comparing to the simple or double winged planes. One of the biggest advantages of it is the wing can be less in size and it’s more firm. Since the Ellipse wing form is self-sustaining, there are now air vortexes by the sides of the wings, where it gives up to 30% increase in power compared to the traditional airplanes!
For your information, the Ellipse wing is actually the concept derived from Elliptical wing, where is a wing planform shape and it first seen on aircraft in the 1930s. Most of the elliptical taper shortens the chord near the wingtips that all parts of the wing experience equivalent downwash. It lifts at the wing tips and improving aerodynamic efficiency due to a greater induced drag equation.
To be honest, it would be even better, if you’re able to drive this Ellipse Wings and soaring on the clear blue sky, isn’t it?

The reader who identified the Ellipse Wing with Elliptical planform wings got it confused. This Belorussian aircraft’s wing is elliptical in the front view, while obviously its planform is rectangular. The classic elliptical wing (see Spitfire)had a zero-length wing-tip chord. This aircraft has no wing-tip at all. That’s what makes it interesting. The idea is not new; but this is the first time I see it in a full size aircraft. Has it flown yet?
